Helping children and adolescents regulate severe temper outbursts
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder affects children and adolescents with severe, recurrent temper outbursts grossly disproportionate to situations, occurring three or more times weekly. Between outbursts, youth exhibit persistent irritability observable across settings. This impairs functioning at home, school, and with peers. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, emotion regulation training, parent management, virtual reality emotional skills practice, and medication help young people develop emotional control and reduce outburst frequency.
